I've been to Duelmen last July. I managed to bring out of retirement Fred
Goussey who was disappointed he couldn't play with multiple Necropotence. I was
pleased to meet IRL some French players I had met on the net. There were also
Italians and Dutchmen (I finally had the pleasure to meet Rudy 'Morefling' van
Soet) for a truely international event. So, they made the announcements in
German as well as in English for the first time. 88 players came to fight for a
Timetwister. 7 Swiss rounds as usual. I took Vengeur Masqué again with minor

2 Misdirection
1 Time Walk
1 Tradewind Rider
1 Voidmage Apprentice
3 Volrath's Shapeshifter

1 Black Lotus
4 Illusionary Mask

1 Nantuko Vigilante
1 Ravenous Baloth

1 Plaguebearer
1 Withered Wretch
3 Back to Basics

1 Bottle Gnomes
1 Masticore

Round 1: Nils Muller - U/B Trix 80+ cards
I was first paired against Rafael Szmigielski-Smiechovski (nice lastname :) but
we got repaired because some T2 players were registered in T1 or the other way
Game 1, Nils is mana screwed. He has only an Island and Mox Diamond for 10
turns, discarding Trix components. 2 hits from Dreadnought and we go to our
Game 2, we are both mana screwed, I kept a 1 land hand and have to discard 3
times while Nils is stuck at 2 mana again. I then get Brainstorm, a land and a
Mox and Survival hits the board. He kills a few creatures but can't cope with
the card advantage generated by Survival and Squee.
2-0, 3 points.

Round 2: Alexander Witt - Zombie Infestation
This is not the Dutchman that won a Master, it is a quiet German, assisted by
his nice girlfriend. He plays a bit slowly though.
He counters my Survival, but Mask gets through. Main deck Smother takes care of
Phyrexian Dreadnought, but I play a Shapeshifter which he can't stop. Actually,
he could have since I made the mistake to play a Tropical Island while he had a
Wasteland in play. But he misses it.
Game 2 takes a long time. Since I hadn't seen much of his deck, I didn't
sideboard optimally (no Withered Wretch). This allow him to gain huge card
advantage through the Bazaar of Baghdad + Squee combo. I didn't draw too well,
but topdecked my Masticore at the right time (I had Squee in hand) to hold his
Psychatog at bay. Time is announced, and Alexander has board advantage, but 5
turns is a bit short. Time Walk seals the deal as I have to regenerate
Masticore, which taps it and leaves Psychatog the opportunity to go for my
1-1, 4 points.

Round 3: Marius Kruthof - B/w suicide 'Yin/Yang'
I have to mulligan to 6 cards. Marius gets a turn 1 Duress getting Mask instead
of Survival. I play a 2nd turn Survival, then Brainstorm into another Mask. I
kill him by attacking with 2 Dreadnoughts.
Yet another mulligan for me. Marius start with turn one Sol Ring, turn 2 and 3
Hymn. But I managed to Brainstorm in response of the second Hymn, setting up a
Mask + Voidmage Apprentice thanks to Lotus. He gets turn 4 Duress for my last
card: it's a Dreadnought. I attack with the Dreadnought on turn 5, Marius
attempts a Reprisal with is countered by the Apprentice. He has no way out.
2-0, 7 points.

Round 4: Roland Bode - My klong's deck
Roland is playing the new combo deck based around Burning Wish killing with
Tendrils of Agony.
He wins the toss and goes Lotus, Academy Mana Vault. Turn 2 Fact or Fiction,
Consultation and goes on to kill me.
Too bad I didn't put Arcane Laboratory in my sideboard.
Game 2 goes along the same lines. He isn't hurt at all by my Back to Basics and
kills me turn 3 after a Mind's Desire for 5.
0-2, 7 points.

Round 5: Patrick Goetz - GroAtog
Well, his version obviously suffers from the lone Gush.
He starts with Duress on my Survival. I play Volrath's Shapeshifter, then
Gigapede. I attack with both, he blocks the VS with a 4/4 Dryad.I activate the
ability of VS (to discard a Dreadnought). Patrick Stiffles. No problem, I pay 2
again and discard the Dreadnought, killing the 5/5 Dryad. He casts Yawgmoth's
Will, play Atog and Duress getting a Force of Will. This is annoying, as my VS
is now 0/1 and I don't have anything to change its form in hand. Patrick is at
6, I attack and he concedes while he should have blocked the Gigapede with the
Game 2 goes my way with turn one Mox, Ancestral, Birds of Paradise, turn 2
Plaguebearer and Survival. In his 3rd turn, he cast his own Ancestral, I
midirect it, he gushes in hope of a pitch counter but doesn't get one. He only
has one permanent left, a 4/4 Dryad that I kill with Plaguebearer. Fortunately,
he doesn't have a Stifle which would have put him back in the game.
2-0, 10 points.

Round 6: Thorben Schroeder - Hulk Smash
Thorben casts a turn 3 Psychatog, I answer with Mask and Dreadnought, followed
by 2 more Dreadnoughts. Game.
In the second game, he is somewhat mana screwed after a mulligan. He pyroblasts
my Brainstorm (to delay me I guess), then Fire my Quirion Ranger in his main
phase. I play Back to Basics and it hits. He casts Mystical Tutor for
Naturalize, then smothers my Nantuko Vigilante I had played face down. I topdeck
a Survival and he has no counter. He casts Merchant Scroll to get Ancestral
which gives him Naturalize to cope with Survival. I have a Shifter-Genesis and
attack with it. He topdecks a Pernicious Deed, but can't fire it for 5. He
missed the fact that he could have activated it for zero, destroying my Mox so
my VS would become 0/1.
2-0, 13 points.

Round 7: Bjorn Ortmann - Aggro control
His deck is 4 colours (no green), with a lot of draw (Brainstorm, Accumulated
Knowledge), Meddling Mage and Psychatog.
He is mana screwed, has to discard several times, then goes for it and ancestral
himself. I respond with my own Ancestral but he has a Misdirection. This time,
he has to discard several cards. I kill him with 2 Shifter-Naughts.
Game 2, he opens with Lotus, Mox Pearl, go. I play a turn 2 Survival which Bjorn
forces which I force myself. He sacrifices his Lotus and Cycle Shoreline stuff
to get an Island, casts Meddling Mage (to name VS), but I Force it. I topdeck a
Mask, play Voidmage Apprentice I was holding and he can't come back from there.
2-0, 16 points.

This 5-1-1 record gets me 7th place and a BB Volcanic Island (woohoo).
I had a good time as usual in Duelmen. Carsten Koetter manages a 7-0-0 with The
Shining. Between the Shining and My klong's deck, I really need those Arcane
Labs in the board. Fred finished with 9 points with B/g Void.
